According to a very old tradition, the highly
venerated sanctuary of the Nativity of Our Lady
of Mellieha was blessed by St. Paul's the Apostle.
The same tradition would have it that the icon
of our Lady painted on the bare rock is the work
of St. Luke the Evangelist.
This church was built in the
17th century, recently restored and is now open
as a museum. It is possible that this is where
the Apostle St. Paul and his fellow-survivors
of the shipwreck in the year 60 A.D. spent their
fist days on the island.
The parish church of Mosta dedicated to Our Lady,
was designed by the Maltese architect Giorgio
Grognet de Vasse, the first stone was laid in
1833. The church's dome is the fourth largest
in the world, exceeded in size only by St. Peter's
in Rome, St. Sophia in Istanbul and the parish
church of Xewkija, in Gozo.
At Birkirkara is dedicated to the Nativity of
Our Lady. Many Maltese emigrants in different
parts of the world still keep at heart the devotion
to the "Madonna tal-Herba"
The front gardens of the residential
palace of the President of Malta. These gardens
were built under the rule of the French Grand
Master Antoine De Paule, contains quite a large
number of rare trees.
